The Republic of Cameroon in West Africa became an independent country in 1960 and has since held popular elections to choose a president and the 180 members of its unicameral legislative branch. The government has worked with international economic organizations to boost its economic growth since 1990. It has realized significant gains but still grapples with a 30 percent unemployment rate.
