Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fourth most populated democracy in the world. Brazil's economy is larger than any other South American country due to its strong agricultural, mining and industrial sectors, though the country still struggles with a 10 percent unemployment rate. The Brazilian government has made the alleviation of poverty one of its top priorities. While many Brazilians enjoy access to improved water sources, nearly 20 million are still without access in forgotten or neglected rural areas. Brazil boasts amazing plant and animal diversity and is home to approximately 40 percent of the world's remaining rainforest. u Donors

Describe how safe water will help these communities: The only water available to these communities is Amazon River water, which is very muddy. Being closer to the mouth of the Amazon, the sewage from basically the entire Amazon River basin passes by their homes bringing disease and illness. These filters will clean their water and help to eliminate the severe intestinal problems the communities have long suffered from. Testimonies from the Community Members: Describe how safe water will help these communities: Thamis Pinheiro Palheta from Sao Francisco: "My family has suffered from stomach cramps and blood in their urine, now we are cured." Jose Andra Barbosa sa dos Santos: "We received a water filter 45 days ago. I want two more filters to give to my relatives so they can have clean water. These filters are a blessing to my community." Nilson Primauera da Silva: "The quality of our water is bad, it is filled with feces and bacteria, but now we have clean water because of these filters. They are a blessing." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Brazil: January & February, 2012 Apr 5th, 2012 •Name and location of community served: The Mararu River GPS location S:01.10.823 @ W: 051.25.266 and the Mararuzinho River GPS location S:01.10.058 @ W: 051.30.687 located in the municipality of Gúrupa. • Describe community served / population / water sources / etc: Various river communities totaling around 1000 people. It is called yellow water because its color comes from a mix of mud and cattle feces. Describe how community water needs were met (wells / filters / etc): Installed 90 bio-sand filters Describe how safe water will help this community: The community over health should improve greatly. There were many complaints of headache due to dehydration because of the lack of clean drinking water. The filters should also help eliminate most of the Giardia in the area. Describe any training done in the community and any follow-up needed: Gave instruction to one or more person on how to use and maintain sand bio-sand filter at each installation site. Describe how community water needs were met (wells / filters / etc): Installed 90 bio-sand filters Include a quote about the project from at least one community member: A man said to us: Before the filters arrived, we had many sicknesses. Now we should have no more sickness because we never had good water before. Brazil: November, 2010 Project Report Jan 6th, 2012 Report Summary: Name and location of community served: The Guajará River, including the communities of Espirito Santo (about 20 houses) and Bakapao (about 15 houses) Describe community served / population / water sources / etc: The majority of houses served were simple, wood river houses on stilts. 70% of those living on this river are very poor. The only water source is the river. Describe how community water needs are helped and work progression at this community (wells / filters / etc): The filters provide pure water for each house. 60 Biosand filters were delivered on this trip, the third to this remote Amazon tributary. We will likely make several more trips to the people living on this river. Each family receives education about the benefits of pure water and how to care properly for the filter. Describe how safe water will help this community: Especially in this community, the people living here will benefit from the filters because the water is very dirty, perhaps because the majority of families living on this river raise water buffalo which constantly stir up and soil the water. Describe any training done in the community and any follow-up needed: The responsible person of the house is walked through a fifteen minute training session on the benefits of clean water and how to care for the filter. We will do follow up on this river, because of the multiple return trips, and evaluate use, function, and benefit of the already installed filters. Include comments from at least one community member: This is the third trip to this region, a full day of river travel from Porto de Moz. On our first trip there, an older lady (>70) received a filter and began using it faithfully. She had chronic stomach and intestinal pain and cramping (for years) and within a couple weeks of drinking filtered water, her pain and diarrhea completely resolved. She told EVERYONE about the filter, what it did for her, and its incredible value. Since that time, we have virtually every family on the river asking for a filter. They receive them gladly and are using them faithfully and with enthusiasm. She is our filter evangelist in this region and her witness has caused increased awareness of the benefits of clean water and the effectiveness of the Biosand Filter. Brazil: January, 2011 Project Report Jan 6th, 2012 Report Summary: Name and location of community served: The Guajará River, Barra Village (25 houses) Describe community served / population / water sources / etc: Very poor river and community, even for the Amazon. Little electricity, no running water, no health care. Source of water - a very dirty river Describe how community water needs were met (wells / filters / etc): We delivered 60 filters over 6 days. 35 houses were spread out over two rivers and 25 houses were in a river village (Barra). About 100-120 families will now have consistent clean water. Describe how safe water will help this community: They reported much diarrheal illness and gastritis, both caused by microorganisms in the water that will be eliminated by the filters Describe any training done in the community and any follow-up needed: Each family received instruction on the operation of the filter, how it worked, its value, and maintenance. We will follow up in two months when we travel to a river close by. Include a quote about the project from at least one community member: A woman received a filter two months ago and has 20 people living with her in her house. She had previously used chlorine to treat their drinking water. She said they had multiple cases of diarrhea per week among the 20 people in the house and in the two months since they have begun to use the filter, they have maybe had 2 or 3 minor cases, at the most. The offending agent has likely been the protozoan giardia, which is not killed by chlorine. ![]() ![]() |
